Abstract

The present research has as theme the catharsis in the artistic performance Gota d´água, by Chico Buarque and Paulo Pontes. The play makes intertextuality with “Medéia”, an Eurípedes’ classic, which has been inspiring several works of moral and social stamp, during the whole history of the humanity. The performance the narrative traces the myth of the poor and the followers of supernatural, contrasted with kings and wizards of the old Greek history. Medéia, Jasão, Creonte, Aia of Medéia and the Traditional Choir of the Greeks are differently characterized in the current act. It is a picture of the modern society that is unjust and full of social contrasts, reality of many Brazilians of the XXI century. The general objective of this work is to demonstrate how catharsis happens in the performance Gota d´água. Therefore, we will explain theoretically what a catharsis is to, afterward, relate it with daily situations and to accomplish comparisons between the play and scenes which show more explicitly catharsis in Brazilian daily. This research is basically bibliographical. There is the expectation to show that catharsis, even of Aristotelian theoretical base, can link with current texts, related to the daily of the current social.
