Influence of the main institutional aspects for the competitive performance of orange agro-system in the State of Paraná, Brazil

Abstract

The main institutional aspects of orange agro-system in the state of Parana, Brazil, are analyzed to define which factors may be considered favorable, neutral and unfavorable. The rapid rural appraisal method was applied. Whereas current analysis investigated five institutional aspects, namely, agricultural credit, crop insurance, taxation, exchange rate and food safety, it also emphasized the influence of these institutional aspects on relationships between producers and processors of the Parana’s orange agro-system and the manner it affects the agro-system’s performance. Results show that agricultural credit and food safety may be favorable factors; that crop insurance and taxation may be neutral factors; and that exchange rate may be unfavorable for the competitive performance of the Parana’s orange agro-system.
