Abstract

The sheep and goat business is a fundamentally important agricultural activity in the semi-arid region of northeastern Brazil. Studies and research focusing in this type of agribusiness are very important for the development of this activity which produces income in a continuous and sustainable way. Current investigation establishes the main features of the sheep and goat production chain in the central region of the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, and discusses its structure, difficulties and competitive advantages. Data from field research undertaken in three towns of the central region of the state were employed. Several problems were reported in some key segments, mainly production, distribution and institutions belonging to the chain’s organization. It has been verified that the region’s milk production is almost exclusively forwarded to the benefit of the state government's “Milk Program”, without the competitiveness of private customers for goat and sheep milk in the above-mentioned state. On the other hand, the processing segment has an adequate structure and the producing towns of the region are integrated among themselves.
