Abstract

Brazilian reservoirs, rivers and lakes are analyzed and their water quality with cyanobacteria that produce toxins causing many diseases and with others that may be used in human and animal food are compared. The quantity of cyanobacteria in the water is a great risk to the population, with high rates of disease and even death. Cyanobacteria-originated toxins are related to lack in investments in basic sanitation. Cyanobacteria may remain in the water even after treatments in reservoirs. In fact, they attack tubes and piping that take water to the consumer and thus compromise water quality. Studies have shown that some types of cyanobacteria may be used in human and animal food since they contain high rates of nutrients and essential amino acid in their composition.
