The bivalve production chain in Santa Catarina, Brazil, and its management and operational limitations

Abstract

Bivalve farming (mussels and oysters), a major component in the socio-economic development of the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, combines the activities of public and private agencies in fish farming. Current analysis deals with the management and the operational limitations of the local bivalve production chain. Current exploratory research, undertaken by direct observations and the literature on the subject, employs data quality. Results show that the bivalve production chain, comprising production of supplies, farming, processing, marketing and distribution, involves a wide range of items that restrict its full development. The implementation of new technologies is required to improve management and increase productivity. Based on the collected information, the items that compose the bivalve production chain are identified and organized in a flow chart exhibiting their interaction mainly undertaken through the logistic process.
