Abstract

The evolution and current status of issues and conditions of ecologically-based agriculture in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil, are analyzed. Information and data survey has been undertaken to understand the social and economic dynamics of producers and consumers, mainly of institutions which are the main promoters and organizers of most initiatives. Theoretical revision concentrates on concepts dealing with homesteads, agro-ecology and organic agriculture and a description of the formation of international and national legal framework and key policies implemented in Brazil and in the state of Pernambuco. Exports of the country’s organic products, agricultural fairs and agro-ecological markets are investigated. Analysis shows the growth of organic and agro-ecology spaces and fairs in various Brazilian states, concomitant with an increasing worldwide demand for organic products which seems to stimulate healthier habits of consumption and environmental practices. Although this type of export is still fledging in Pernambuco, specialized fairs have provided opportunities for income increase within family agriculture.
