Abstract

The influence of salt stress on the germination and growth of colored cotton seedling, varieties BRS 200, BRS Rubi, BRS Verde and BRS Safira, was analyzed. Seedlings underwent different NaCl concentrations (0, 50, 100, 150, and 200 mM). The seeds were then placed on pre-moistened germitest sheets at different concentrations in a B.O.D buffer at 25°C. Germination characteristics, such as percentage of germinated diaspores, germination speed index, length of aerial part and the primary root of seedling after seven days of growth, were evaluated. Data were analyzed statistically. High NaCl level produced low germination percentage, low germination speed index, small aerial part and primary root. Evaluated varieties had a differentiated behavior. BRS Verde variety revealed itself to be more tolerant in germination with regard to evaluated salinity. BRS 200 variety had a higher tolerance in growth characteristics with regard to an increase in saline concentrations. The root was the most affected section of the seedling by salinity.
