In vitro development of Epidendrum secundum Jacq. in simplified growth media

Abstract
The in vitro seeding is an indispensable tool to propagate the main commercial species of orchids, such as Epidendrum secundum, a species of great importance in obtaining hybrids. The present work aimed to study aspects of the in vitro development of this species by assessing the effect of MS medium with half of its concentration of macronutrients and two media based on fertilizers, Hyponex and Kristalon Laranja. The culture media were autoclaved at 121 ° C and 1 atm pressure for 20 minutes. The seeds were disinfected by being stirred in Eppendorf ® tubes, containing 5% sodium hypochlorite, for five minutes. Subsequently, they were washed and inoculated in flasks with 1 ml of distilled water. Four flasks were seeded per treatment with 1 g of seeds each. After 180 days of cultivation, the most efficient medium for the development of in vitro plantlets was inferred to be the MS medium with half of its concentration of acronutrients, which had the highest means for all the biometric variables assessed. Therefore, it can be commercially used by small producers since it presents a lower production cost.
