Abstract

Applications of Contingent Evaluation Method (CEM) are analyzed for the economical valorization of natural assets and their employment as tools for the management of urban green areas in the benefit of the inhabitants. Results by several researchers using CEM in different places in Brazil and abroad were compared. Method is based on the valorization of public facilities that are estimated as hypothetic markets since they do not have a market price. A survey comprising social and economical variables is employed. An exploratory bibliographical survey was carried out with the respective interpretative investigation of collected data and thus the method’s adequacy in different environmental and cultural contexts was evaluated. Results show that, in spite of its limitations, the method characterized the social, economical and attitudinal aspects of users of natural areas for recreational activities and provided relevant technical and economical information that might help administrators in decision taking.
