Abstract

Knowledge on the speed of water infiltration in soil is relevant for the analysis of irrigation and drainage systems. Inadequate basic infiltration velocity may cause faults in the calculation of structures inherent to irrigation by aspersion. Current analysis produces information on the infiltration rate in two different soils in the state of Paraná, Brazil, with different clay rates. Red Dystroferric Nitossol contains 756.8 g kg-1 clay and Red Dystrophic Latosol contains 210 g kg-1 clay. Water infiltration velocity in soil was obtained by concentric rings infiltrometer at constant discharge, and data were adjusted by Kostiakov´s model. Sampling area was divided into thirty-six 2 x 2m sub-parcels. Water infiltration test was undertaken in the central part of each sub-parcel and soil density and porosity was determined. Water infiltration was calculated as a function of time till infiltration rate was constant. Basic infiltration rates were 31.85 and 15.38 mm h-1 for Red Dystroferric Nitossol (76% clay) and Red Dystrophic Latosol (21% clay). Kostiakov´s model was adequate for water infiltration rate estimates in the two types of soil under analysis.
