Abstract

Since the deregulation of the milk market in Brazil, in the beginning of the 1990’s, significant changes have been observed in the national dairy industry related to new patterns of production and consumption of milk and its derivatives. However, the competitive performance of the national processing companies is still limited when contrasted with the transformations in this sector. This research aimed to carry out an analysis of the current strategic situation of Parás dairy industry, in order to investigate the reasons that local companies have difficulty to develop their strategic role in their field of activity. Therefore an analysis was performed of the organizations applying the SWOT analysis technique as an evaluation of the organizational environments. The adopted methodology was based on qualitative and quantitative assumptions, involving a case study on three small and medium dairy businesses in the São Félix do Xingu microregion, in the Southeast of the State of Pará. As a result of the strategic analysis of these processing organizations, it was verified their limited capacity of getting better results in the process of product innovation, as well in their productive and trading processes, due to the fact that environmental factors play a great force upon the sector, minimizing its chances of getting superior competitive performance and contributing very little to the strategic positioning of these organizations.
