Analysis of Harvest Time and Plant Parts for the Extraction of Basil Essential Oil

Abstract
Essential oils are an important group of prime matters for food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic industries whose extraction yield is particularly affected by soil-climate parameters and other agronomic factors. Current analysis investigates whether harvest time of Ocimum basilicum L. (Lamiaceae) affects yield of essential oil in the different segments of the plant. The experiment was conducted in the vegetation house of the Higher Agriculture School “Luiz de Queiroz” in Piracicaba SP Brazil. Experiment was totally randomized with four sections of the plant for two harvest timetables (4x2), with three replications, or rather, four sections of the plant (leaves, herb stem, sub-lignin stem and inflorescences) and two timetables 9h00 and 15h00. Essential oil was extracted by hydrodistillation in a Clevenger apparatus modified for one hour and thirty minutes. Results showed that harvest affect the extraction of essential oil, while leaves and inflorescences were the parts of the plant Ocimum basilicum L. with the highest rate of essential oil.
