Abstract

This project aimed to characterize municipal solid waste (MSW) in the city of Presidente Castelo Branco, PR – Brazil. The quartering method was used in the characterization of the solid waste. In this characterization, specific percentages of each type of waste were found among the solid waste generated in the city. The composition was as follows: metal (6%), organic matter (45%), other (17%), paper / cardboard (12%), plastic (14%) and glass (6%). The proportion of waste varied with the day of collection, being the highest content of organic matter found on Monday. The composition of MSW of the present study suggests the feasibility of separation of garbage for recycling.
