This article is a narrative review with the primary objective of developing a descriptive study on the home care required by patients living with a gastrostomy. To better illustrate this context, the types of gastrostomy tubes are described, along with the most common complications that may arise. This facilitates early identification and provides guidance for caregivers and family members on how to respond appropriately to each situation. The literature search for this narrative review was conducted in databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Web of Science. The analyzed studies highlight the fragility of health education regarding both preoperative and postoperative care, as well as the limited understanding among caregivers about the importance of gastrostomy in improving the quality of life for patients who are unable to maintain adequate long-term oral intake of nutrition and hydration. Additionally, the studies identified frequent difficulties in handling the devices, which often generate insecurity and anxiety in adapting to this new reality within the home environment. In this context, the present review seeks to address a significant gap by offering a high-quality educational booklet that provides essential guidance to support caregivers, family members, and healthcare professionals. This resource aims to answer common questions and help manage challenges related to gastrostomy care, ultimately promoting greater autonomy and safety in the daily lives of those caring for patients with a gastrostomy.
