Abstract

urrent essay analyzes the composition techniques in pictures of violence published in the newspapers Folha de S. Paulo and Primeira Página, in particular those linked to accidents in the town area. Foregrounded on Eco ́s rhetoric of the image, the construction of meaning will be analyzed by studies on the ideological filters in images and on the media processes that pervade the construction of news. Analysis is restricted to the above mentioned newspapers published between March and August 2014, with their Sunday editions. The process of the construction of meaning in the photograph of the Primeira Página places the category Urban Accidents within a strong representation of the meaning of violence, whereas the Folha de S. Paulo provides low representativeness in the concept of violence when dealing with images of accidents in the region of São Paulo and throughout Brazil.
