Abstract

The plants allelopathic activity has been investigated in several species, both in Brazil and other countries. Allelopathy is the direct or indirect effect of one plant on another through chemical compounds released into the environment. The secondary metabolites or natural products involved in allelopathy are called allelochemicals and are found in tissues of different plant parts. Bioassays were developed to evaluate the allelopathic effects of the aerial parts of Achillea millefolium L. on Lactuca sativa L. Aqueous extracts were prepared infusion and crushed at concentrations of 50%, 40%, 30%, 20%, 10% and 0, using distilled water as control. After seven days it was analyzed the percentage of germination, stem length, root length and number of lettuce seedlings roots. The lowest germination was found in the extract infusion of 30% to 50%. In general, the extracts showed strong inhibitory effect on the development of lettuce seedlings.
