Abstract

Although education for sustainability should be one of the goals of every teaching community, difficulties can arise in the development of such a practice. Schools and educators need help developing this knowledge, such as the lack of support material, technical knowledge, and pedagogical approach to teaching while retaining students' attention. The objective of this article is to describe the results of an education project for sustainability whose aim was to make students agents of social transformation towards a more sustainable society. The research method was action research. Intending to contribute to the development of sustainability education, a mining company developed, supported by an institution focused on the subject, a structured and wide-ranging program involving all schools in a city whose main activity is coal mining. The main objective of the project developed by the mining company was to teach the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) declared by the UN to all students at all schools in the city of Candiota in Rio Grande do Sul. The secondary objective was to train schoolteachers to develop permanent actions to teach sustainability. The results extrapolated the limits of the schools since the efforts developed by the actors also affected the communities located in the surroundings of the institutions, changing the habits of residents and the relationship with the environment where they live. Since the results exceeded the city limits, one of the implications of the study was introducing the concept of a sustainable region.
