Abstract

Family agriculture is a productive unit exploited by farmers and their families. Due to economical instability the diversification of agricultural activities is an alternative which warrants more independence in the wake of social and economical contingencies. The small scale agro-industrialization may be an option for profit. Current analysis studies the profile of family agro-industries in the centralwestern region of the state of Paraná, Brazil, in 2012. A data survey was undertaken by descriptive and quantitative research on 18 agro-industries, or rather, 72% of the agro-industries in the region. Results show that 63% of owners are between 31 and 50 years old; 50% are males and 50% are females. An increase of 31% profit and 25% life quality may be underscored after the establishment of the agro-industries. The main problems comprise employee contract (37%) and lack of technical knowledge (20%). The family agro-industries analyzed are basically linked to small farms, entrepreneurship maturity and good law abiding indexes, high level schooling and updating through courses related to the agricultural subject involved.
