Abstract

Colônia Esperança appeared in 1935, organized by catholic Japanese who came to the north of Paraná searching for soil to cultivate. It is located in the city of Arapongas (PR), and appeared (mostly) thanks to Koshiro Suzuki’s initiative, an immigrant that came from Japan in 1931 to catechize Japanese people that already were in Brazil. This article discourses about the rise of Colônia Esperança, narrates part of Suzuki’s history and investigates the importance of photography and its language in this process. For that, it uses bibliographical research, oral history iconographic analysis and iconological interpretation of photographies from that epoch. This work presents partial results from the author’s master’s degree research dissertation. Through the end of this text, it’s expected to make known both the pioneer and the community and to demonstrate the importance of photographic images for the historical rescue of the initial years of this Japanese redoubt in Paraná.
