Freedom of Expression and Democracy: A Review on the Concept in Mediatic Societies

Abstract

The freedom of expression, so important for democracy regardless of the theorical line one chooses, has been interpreted in many different ways. The present paper intends to discuss the concept and the scope of this ideal in diverse theorical lines, from the concept of freedom that each one of them refers to – negative or positive, modern or ancient, etc. For this conceptualization, special attention will be given to the implications of the media system and the “expression market”. The main goal will be to analyze the modifications in the concept that may be necessary to properly understand the freedom of expression in mediatic societies.
