Conflict of interests in the return of the football professional to sporting activities after lesion

Keywords: Complex bioethics, Decision taking, Sports Medicine, Conflict of interests

Abstract

Sports and medicine are activities with different types of value. The former aims at a better performance and winning, whilst the latter tries to preserve the athlete´s health. Interests are convergent. However, this may change when a lesion occurs. Recovery time in the case of a sports lesion may be changed due to several variables coupled to the evolution of the recovery process. Athletes, health teams, directors, technical commission and even sports press members may positively or negatively affect the process of decision taking. The process of decision-taking, including associated coercion involved with the return of the athlete with lesion, is described within the perspective of different participants concerned. Through a study involving mixed, qualitative and quantitative methods, fourteen semi-structured interviews were undertaken with athletes, health teams, club directors and sports journalists. The Coercion Perception Scale was employed for athletes and health professionals. Quality data were evaluated by Content Analysis in NVIVO 11 system. Quantitative data were evaluated by simples frequency. Two thematic categories were produced as main components in decision-taking: internal and external pressure. There was a difference in coercion perception between athletes and health teams. The technical commission was identified as the main agent in external pressure.
