Abstract

Current essay discusses the constitution of singularity (strangeness) analyzed by the Russian formalist Viktor Chklovsky in "Iskusstvo priem kak" ("Art as Process"), published in the second edition of Poetika (1917). The term ‘singularity’ or ‘strangeness’ in the Formalists’ nomenclature occurs when a literary work introduces the reader to a form of assessment that reevaluates expectations and concepts about it. The technique creates a particular understanding of the object. Based on this theory, Lygia Fagundes Telles’s short story Os objetos is analyzed from the above mentioned aspect, or rather, the investigation will be on strangeness in the plot. The choice of this issue is justified by the lack of theoretical material for this type of analysis, and because this procedure may contribute towards the literary understanding of other texts featuring the same procedures. It is expected that knowledge of this process provides different views (strangeness) on the object under analysis.
