<b>Marked Cards? The Social Movements as Agents against Corruption in the Public Service

Abstract

The theme of bribery and corruption and the lack of morality in politics is daily present in the Brazilian social media, featuring high profit graft and big money kickbacks. Current research analyzes the social origin of corruption and possible ways for its defeat. When contemporary authors study the onset of corruption, they identify that personal connection webs in the Brazilian social structures are propitious to this practice. A brief analysis of instances of local municipal corruption in the southern region of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is provided. The Movement for Ethics in Politics discussed through a case study as a social organization referential that combats corruption in the towns of the above-mentioned region. The movement’s history, structure and its progress are given through participating observation and by documents containing minutes and registers. Results show that civil society organized in social movements can give a great contribution for the effective control of the local government and the decrease of corruption.
