Abstract

The relationship between the concepts of culture and memory is provided, highlighting the manner that festive events appropriate these concepts through the establishment of tradition. The Lapa Congada is an instance of the relationship between these elements since, through this celebration, the community of Lapa PR Brazil keeps alive its history and culture. Both are modified due to the social contest in which they are inserted. The celebration itself is subjected to the cultural perspectives of the subjects who enact it. The Congada is a cultural manifestation hailing from the slavery period and marks the presence of the Negro in the state of Parana. This scenario consists of a symbolic struggle between two kingdoms, the Catholic kingdom of the Congo and the pagan kingdom of Angola. The embassy sent by Queen Nzinga from Angola causes disorders in the kingdom of the Congo. Armed clashes ensue but the king of the Congo kingdom forgives the Angolan ambassador who converts to Christianity and becomes a devotee of St. Benedict. The celebration combines Catholic and pagan elements in honor of St. Benedict. The Congada is an example of the relationship between culture and memory and represents the community’s attempt to keep alive a tradition.
