Abstract

Most teachers of Religion in Brazilian schools have collaborated towards the permanent reproduction of theological methods and catechetical practices which are frequently of an alienating nature. Students are trained and conditioned to a given doctrine, generally the Christian one. Foregrounded on theories by Freire (1999; 2009) and Libâneo (1990), a pedagogical proposal for the teaching of Religion is discussed by which an epistemological and critical reflection is suggested on this type of teaching so that the technical/theological limits of students and especially teachers could be overcome. A generator theme based on a progressive liberating trend would be a methodological option adequate for the teaching of Religion.
