DECISION TO BUY BY A AND B CLASSES IN SUPERMARKETS

Abstract
Current analysis provides the buying behavior of high and middle classes in supermarkets. A quantitative and descriptive study was undertaken with people from Classes A and B who were responsible for buying food for the family and lived in Campo Grande MS Brazil, during the first half of 2011. A structured questionnaire was employed and data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and factorial analysis. Results show that the most important variables in food choice in supermarkets comprised cleanliness, packages without flaws and within the expiry date, chilling or freezing conditions. Five factors were identified: food safety (Factor 1) was the most relevant for consumers; price (Factor 3), convenience (Factor 4) and environment (Factor 5) had medium importance and with the same relevance for the interviewed people; nutritional information (Factor 2) was the less important factor.
