Abstract

This research will be made, firstly, through the readings about the literary and critical fortune of death as a theme for academic research. So, the starting is the novel A Ceia (1975), written by José Mauro de Vasconcelos, whose narrative reveals the cruel reality of the terminally ill patients when they are "on their own" in a hospital infirmary. Then, it is extremely important the reading of the following books: A Mort: uma abordagem sócio-cultural (1998), by Júlio José Chiavenato; A Solidão dos Moribundos (2001), by Norbert Elias and Sobre a Morte e o Morrer (1996), by Elizabeth Kübler-Ross; as well as other readings. Thus, the greatest aim is at thinking about this theme as a possible analysis within the proposed literary novel and, with it, to verify the facing of death by the terminally ill patients, discussing all the problematic in volved in it.
