Abstract

As a rule, firms seek frenetically the establishment of different factors to aggregate value within the market and be more and more competitive. The personnel within the organization are the motor force for higher results. Personnel management policies and practices in Engineering firms are analyzed by a qualitative field survey followed by a case study in three firms in Guarapuava PR Brazil, between October and November 2012. The half-structured interview was undertaken with three personnel managers of the firms. The firms´ policies and practices gave great emphasis on recruitment and selection, training and development, hygiene and safety and the evaluation of performance. Results showed a strong trend within the policies and practices for recruitment and selection, training and hygiene and safety on work. They highlighted contracting collaborators with enough experience that would allow them to have dominion on the activity due to the risks inherent to their roles. The firms maintained constant trainings to improve the capacity of the collaborators so that the latter might work efficiently and without any mistakes. Researched firms provided their personnel with personal and collective protection equipments so that all could work in safety.
