Abstract

Alcoholism is a collective pathology since it affects all people bonded to the person concerned. Alcohol is actually the main brain depressing psychotropic product and an important cause of morbidity and mortality. Users are called dependent persons, whilst friends and family are co-dependent since they live within the sphere of the dependent person and frequently do not acknowledge their condition. Current analysis, based on a review of the literature on Neuroscience and Psychology, studies possible causes, symptoms in co-dependents and their treatments. Data collection comprised bibliography and information retrieved from papers, books and websites. Results show the need for the comprehension and involvement of the family in the treatment of people with chemical dependence. In fact, the family aspect is highly influential on the behavior of the dependent person and may trigger changes in the general regime of the family.
