COPING STRATEGIES BY FEDERAL TRAFFIC POLICE IN THE CENTRAL REGION OF THE STATE OF RIO GRANDE DO SUL, BRAZIL

Abstract

The job of the Federal Traffic Police may be considered one of great stress. It is actually one of the riskiest since policemen have to cope daily with extreme situations in which emotional resources are stretched. Current analysis identifies the coping strategies by federal traffic policemen in the central region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The descriptive, quantitative and explicatory field research comprised a questionnaire to characterize the agents, or rather, federal traffic police in the central region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Results showed that the most employed coping strategies were focused on the issue. The strategies are taught and the actions determined. The subjects should, therefore, treat others with courtesy and should be trained to cope with situations that may be foreseen in the work milieu.
