Abstract

The establishment of a Project for Sustainable Development (PSD) in the town of Anapu, Pará, Brazil, is analyzed. PSD in a region renowned for agrarian conflicts and huge deforestation is an alternative for sustainable development. Large land areas may be decentralized from the control of a few people and relocated to family subsistence agriculture, with provisions of food for town people. A new developmental paradigm is revealed through more sustainable and competent practices, coupled to activities that go beyond the current model. An ecologically sustainable level will be reached with great effort and partnership between the State and settlers. The latter will receive loans for the development of their activities, with the possibility of fixing the peasant on the areas.
