Abstract

Nowadays children’s literature has a developmental function in terms of culture and the formation of critical of readers. Thus, we have developed, with students in the 1st to the 4th year of primary education from a private school and a state school in the city of Maringá, the motivation towards reading by the use of children’s work by a classical Brazilian writer: Monteiro Lobato. This writer, in the 1940’s, when he wrote his works, left the idea of the need to transform Brazil into a power of critical readers and thinkers, who actively participate in society. Monteiro Lobato, through his works, is considered a classic in children’s literature and, as we re-read him, we do that with the same curiosity of the first time. With this transforming character, we have worked with students in a playful and pedagogical way, through activities such as telling and working the story with participative stories of the classical works of this writer, providing a pleasant atmosphere so that the student may construct, in a meaningful and long-lasting way, the interest and the pleasure for reading, especially the classical works, and so contributing to the development of critical and thinking individuals.
