Abstract

Current paper problematizes the theme of laicism in government-run schools and Religious Studies. Foregrounded on bibliographical studies, the author investigates whether the school complies with the Brazilian Constitution that guarantees the right to live within a school environment, respecting freedom of religion and agnosticism, and privileging tolerance between hegemonic and minor religions, including theist and atheist convictions. Research is relevant and up to date since it is based not merely on theoretical and critical texts on the theme but also on true cases of violence in schools triggered by religious stands. It is required that educators and people involved in education should revise their pedagogical practices which are frequently contaminated by biased attitudes.
