  • Marcelo Augusto Pirateli UEM

Abstract

The present work is concerned with carrying out some considerations on the educational character of the tragic poetry by Lucius Aneu Seneca, whose objective was the development of the ideal man, the wise man, the one that would be capable of keeping control and rationalizing over feelings, impulses and passions. It is possible to say that his tragedies are metaphors that help to reflect on the attitudes of the characters, concerning the form of their actions and the calamities that take place when passions triumph over reason. For Seneca, the vices and, especially, the passions are the main factors for unbalancing the order, preventing man from living according to nature, which ends up by in disastrous consequences.
