Abstract

The article analyzes the events in the journey of Captain James Hamilton, character in the book ‘Crossing the River'of Caryl Phillips, heading to Africa to purchase new slaves and later sell them in the United States and Europe. As a white man, the discussions are concerning the other side of the history of slavery and subsequent post-colonialism and patriarchy. Our results show Hamilton as a man with many postures in front of his positions of captain or husband, which shows another side of the colonizer, not just the monstrous usually perceived. Still, this comes as a metaphor of imperialism itself, which, despite all the destruction, provided the building of ties unpredictable before.
