The Construction of Categories to Think About African Religions: An Overview of Raimundo Nina Rodrigues Writings

Abstract

This work aims at exposing the results of our Scientific Initiation Project titled Gods and Hierophanies in a “medical-scientific” perspective, which had the objective of studying how categories that think African religions in Brazil were constituted, in the transition from the 19th to the 20th century, based on the works “O animismo fetichista dos negros baianos” (The fetishist animism of the Baian negros) (1900) e “Os africanos no Brasil” (The Africans in Brazil) (1932), by the Baian doctor Raimundo Nina Rodrigues (1862-1906), considered as the initiator of studies on African religions in Brazil, attempting at helping the existing historiography on the theme.
