THE EVOLUTION OF INTER-BRICS TRADE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN 2001 AND 2017

Abstract

This study refers to the potential that an approximation of the BRICS countries can generate, with the initial idea of an approximation for political purposes to increase the representativeness of developing countries in the international scenario, the group has at each dome its scope expanded. The objective of this work is to analyze whether this political and diplomatic approach caused an increase in trade in the period from 2001 to 2017. In order to meet the objective of this work, analyzes based on the Indexes Comparative Advantage Revealed of Balassa and Lafay were made, these indices seek to whether the country has a comparative advantage in trade. According to the study, it was understood that the countries in the bloc had improvements in trade with their peers through the expansion of their exports and imports. Based on the analysis, Brazil shows strong specialization in commodities, China had better performance in sectors involving industries, Russia and South Africa were better in the ore and metals sector, showing that countries are able to transforming raw material into final product, India finally stood out in the activity of ores, metals and in the textile industry. It can be said that there was an increase in trade between countries and that countries benefited from this approach.
