Abstract

Current analysis characterizes weight loss, gastrointestinal symptoms and the use of vitamin supplements in post-bariatric surgery patients. Data checking was undertaken by a structured form that included questions on the post-surgery period, the amount of weight lost up to the present, the use of vitamin supplements, nutrition monitoring and gastrointestinal phenomena (vomiting, diarrhea, constipation). Results showed that, whereas patients lost an average of 52.82 kg, gastrointestinal symptoms reported by most subjects included vomiting (50.0%) and constipation and diarrhea (16.6%). Moreover, 66.67% of the subjects use vitamin supplements without any nutrition monitoring. Patients showed significant rates in gastrointestinal symptoms, loss of weight and use of vitamin supplements. Care should be taken after bariatric surgery with regard to food consumption and the use of vitamin supplements. Nutritional follow up is highly required.
