ASSOCIATION BETWEEN COVID-19 AND MYOCARDITIS: A REVIEW
Abstract
The state of pandemic was announced by the World Health Organization due to the transmission of the virus SARS-CoV-2 in several countries. Several studies were thus undertaken to analyze the manifestations of COVID-19 which may range from asymptomatic to multiple organ failure. The disease affects the heart with several manifestations, of which viral myocarditis is one, also related to infections by another virus of the family Coronaviridae, such as MERS. Since the virus infected people at the very end of 2019, its consequences, such as myocarditis lesions, are uncertain in the long run. There is a hypothesis that COVID-19 may be related to the heart: infected people have high rates of troponin, a biomarker in myocarditis lesions. The paper underlines the most relevant information, with special focus on the development and worsening of acute myocarditis associated with COVID-19.References
