Life style and health among Down Syndrome holders in Maringá-PR

Abstract

This work aimed at investigating the life style and health of Down Syndrome (DS) holders in the city of Maringá-PR, in the period between 1993 and 2003. The sample was composed of 44 patients, integranted in this period, in the city´s APAE. The research was carried out by the analysis of the patients´records, records, questionnaires and interviews with the participation of the patients´parents. To verify the holders´life style and health, genetic, phenotypic and social data of the holders and their relatives was analyzed. The results outined the profile of the holders of this genetic anomaly, frequent in society. Analysis of the different stages of the disease with its manifestations in the holders was carried out, which has thrown some light on the multiple and complexes aspects that characterizes the disease. The inter-relation characterization among holders and relatives, the actives, the activities they carried out when in contact with society were also observed.
