Abstract

Patents assume a fundamental performance regarding the search, creation and dissemination of new knowledge, besides being seen as strategic tools for the creation and analysis of significant indicators of the dynamic and development level of the P&D. The goal of this study was to approach through the Social Networks Analysis (SNA), the information and knowledge flow that are represented on citations made and received by Brazilian’s patents in functional food given by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), as well to identify the responsible for these citations – inventor(s) or examiner(s) -, the cited types of documents and the nation for them represented. Thus, it was concluded that the most information and knowledge that support the creation of new technologies related to functional foods in Brazil are originated from patent documents that represent developed countries.
