Origin and prevalence of bovines infested with cystercus bovis in the region of Maringá-PR
Abstract
This study retrospective study carried out in the region of Maringá, Paraná describes the prevalence of bovine cysticercosis caused by the larval from of taenia saginata in the animals infested in the year 2000. All the data was obtained from the Federal Inspection Service (SIF) files. This data was analyzed and the prevalence determined in 22 pre-estabilished geographical regions. Animals submitted to slaughter came from amost all the state´s geographical regions. There were only a few animals from neighboring states. Calcified cysts (7%; 6236/103411) were predominant in relation to living (1,7%; 1805/103411). The prevalence of living cysticercus varied between 0,9% and 3,1%; the prevalence of calcified cysts was between 4,7% and 11,5%. Calcified and living cysts were predominant in region R (Ponta Grossa). The relatively tow or inexistent prevalence of cysticercosis in slaughtered bovines suggests that this disease does not cause significant economical ham to the region´s cattle raising. Moreover, the dta suggests that the zoonosis associated to cysticercosis is being controlled by the sanitrian authorities.
