Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of potassium on reducing the severity of dry root rot in bean plants. A completely randomised design was used in a 4 × 3 factorial scheme, consisting of four doses of potassium chloride (0, 1, 10 and 20 mM) and three inoculation times (0, 12 and 24 hours after root wounding), with three replications. Potassium doses were applied from the tenth day after sowing over eight days, and fungi inoculations were performed on the eighteenth day after sowing. There was a reduction in dry root rot severity at doses of 1, 10 and 20 mM. Inoculation times influenced only aerial symptoms, with lower severity observed at 12 hours after wounding. Doses of potassium chloride applied directly to Fusarium solani f. sp. phaseoli did not inhibit mycelial growth. These results indicate that potassium reduces disease severity through an indirect mechanism, unrelated to direct fungal inhibition.
