Abstract

Agriculture in Western São Paulo has undergone significant structural transformations, characterized by the expansion of agroindustrial crops and the reconfiguration of land use. In this context, the key issue is whether these changes have led to diversification or productive specialization. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the agricultural dynamics of the region from 2000 to 2023. Methodologically, data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics were used, applying the Shift-Share model to decompose scale and substitution effects, along with the Simpson Diversity Index to measure productive diversity. The results reveal a dual movement of territorial expansion and internal substitution, with strong growth in crops such as sugarcane and soybean. A reduction in diversity was observed in some mesoregions, associated with productive concentration, while others maintained high levels of diversification, possibly associated with greater heterogeneity in the regional agricultural composition. It is concluded that the region presents a heterogeneous configuration, characterized by the coexistence of specialized and diversified production systems.
