Brazilian rice industry’s challenges and sustainable innovative solutions

Abstract

One of the main challenges industry organization is currently facing is the need for strategies which incorporate innovative interactive practices and the establishment of values focused on sustainability. In the context of the rice industry, such values deserve special concern due to the specificities involved in this area. Three issues arise from such a context: Which challenges rice industries have to overcome to be included in a context of sustainable management? Which strategies are used by rice industries with regard to innovation sustainability? Which decisions are helping or limiting innovation strategies in the rice industry? A research in articles published in the papers on the subject has been undertaken to tackle the problems. The main results point that rice husks, rice husk's ash and water from parboiled rice are valuable sources for industries and reduce socio-environmental impacts. Furthermore, the sector has to face a consumption decrease in Brazil and a reduced participation abroad. Examples of well-succeed innovations and the participation of public and private institutions that are looking for solutions were reported.
