Transaction standard between soybean farmers in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, and Monsanto is analyzed, specifically to identify the key variables of the transaction; characterize institutional arrangement, understand the conflicts in the transaction and characterize the determinants of value generation in the transaction. Half-structured questionnaires were applied to a sample of 25 soybean producers of the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. Agribusiness system, the New Institutional Economy (NIE) and Economy of Transaction Costs (ETC) foregrounded the theory. Partial results revealed that Monsanto provides factors for an extra-market coordination through contracts such as incentives (benefits) and control (legal apparatus and payment system). Transparency of the control system and the use of saved seeds were the main conflicting items. Value generation for producers with regard to the use of technology was considered average due to 1) stability of productivity; 2) low reduction of production costs; 3) dependence on a single active principle (glyphosate) which brought resistance of weeds; 4) dependence on storing of the product in private storehouses or cooperatives (aiming at the need to segregate the final product). Upgrading the control system and making exigencies to Monsanto for the use of a new seed generation Soja Intacta RR2 Pro ® are required, coupled to public or private activities for the monitoring of the use of saved seeds and transparency in current control instrument.Downloads
