Abstract

The inadequate use of medicines is accountable for the highest number of notified cases of intoxication/poisoning worldwide and is considered a serious problem in modern society. Current analysis characterizes intoxication/poisoning by medicines registered at the System of Information of Compounds and Notification (SINANNET) of the region of COMCAM of the state of Paraná, Brazil, during 2007 and 2008. A descriptive, retrospective and quantitative analysis of notified intoxication/poisoning was undertaken. Variables related to intoxicated people, intoxication and medicines involved were studied. Females (77.40%), age bracket between 20 and 29 years old (26.08%), whites (62.61%), incomplete primary schooling (14.78%), profession housewives (22.25%) were dominant among the 115 cases of intoxication. Most cases were related to suicide attempts (73.04%), to contamination through the digestive system (97.39%) and to medicines that work on the Central Nervous System (66.86%). However, a low death index (3.78%) occurred. It may be concluded that the chemist is an indispensable professional. Assistance and medicine monitoring reduce the morbo-mortality of intoxication cases by medicines.
