Prevalence of Malnutrition in a Public Hospital - Vitória, ES, Brazil

Abstract

Current research assesses the prevalence of malnutrition in a public hospital in Vitória ES, Brazil, through the subjective and objective nutrition assessment for hospitalized adults. Anthropometric and biochemical data were retrieved from patients during two months, followed by a subjective and objective nutritional assessment. Ninety-three patients, comprising 61 (65.6%) males and 32 (34.4%) females, aged between 18 and 65, were evaluated, and results were analyzed by descriptive and exploratory statistics and exploratory. Since admission period and their nutritional status were related, it was found that 56.3% of patients admitted since up to 30 days and 57.1% of patients hospitalized for more than 90 days had eutrophic conditions; 68% of patients hospitalized between 31 and 90 days had a prevalence of malnutrition. Results show frequent occurrence of malnutrition or nutritional risk in hospital patients. Since early detection of malnutrition is of great importance, the presence of a nutritional therapy team is essential for the patients’ appropriate treatment.
