Abstract

Chewing system imbalances do not compensate the posture tonic system. Similarly, imbalanced posture tonic system affects the chewing system. Thus, a temporomandibular disorder could cause a change in posture, such as shoulder asymmetry, a frequent feature in people with cross bites. The dysfunction is caused by a lack of harmony between the lower and upper jaws. Current analysis evaluates the relation between cross bite and posture defects, specifically shoulder asymmetry. Further, 530 children from the 1st to the 4th grade of municipal government schools of Umuarama PR Brazil, aged between 7 and 10 years old, males and females, participated in the research. Whereas fifty-six children had cross bite problems (deviation to the left, right and bilateral), 54 had shoulder asymmetry. Nine-year-old children were a majority in the above-mentioned sample. Right cross bite with shoulder asymmetry was highest in females.
