Abstract

Current research evaluates the predominance of blood donors in the internal and external blood collections at the Hemonucleus of Campo Mourão PR Brazil from 2005 to 2009. The clinical sheets of the donors registered during the period by the Hemotherapy Information and Control System of the state of Paraná (SHTWEB) were analyzed. Most donors were male, within the 18 – 64-year-old bracket. Most blood collections were internal and complied to the percentage recommended by the World Health Organization, with 5.8% of the population as donors. However, research found that only 1.5% of the municipalities´ population were blood donors. Conscience raising campaigns are required so that external collections of the neighboring municipalities attended by the same Hemonucleus would improve. Data showed the relevance of epidemiological studies to verify the prevalence of donors and establish their current profile so that the Hemonucleus would also reach the non-donor population and convince it of the importance of blood collecting.
